I'm genuinely perplexed that we haven't seen a drone terror attack/assassination attempt from a non-state actor yet.
Say someone knows where a politician is going to be delivering a speech. Or where a journalist is going to be stood infront of a camera. Or where <insert high profile target here> walks their dog on sundays.
Forget putting guns or explosive payloads onto these things - what's to stop any random person from flying a remote controlled aircraft with, say, a spear tip for a nose, at 40-50 miles an hour, into that person's chest?
And that's just what you could do with a small, commercially available, minimally modified model aircraft. On top of that, tracking down the perpetrator could potentially be incredibly difficult. One man with a big enough chip on his shoulder could wage a months long string of operations. If some has the will to do this, I think they absolutely could.
What on earth could a government possibly do? Ban the sale of drones? Useless. They're easily built from simple parts that would be impossible to ban.
