You're playing Civilization against ai opponents. One has been an asshole for the past 60 turns. Denouncing your work, making demands of your economy, threatening to invade. Eventually they declare war. You crank out an army, start smashing their cities one by one. You have their final city under siege, knowing that the next turn will give you the attack to wipe them out completely. At the start of that turn, the diplomacy window opens. They offer a cease fire and 36 gold but the leader's avatar still looks pissed off.
This is where we're at. A condescending "We're willing to let you stop what you're about to do even though we deserve it."
It's weird in VI, the AI's have agendas and they usually follow them, if you're even strength and in line with their agenda they like you, if you're superior and against their agenda (or winning) they'll denounce you and do nothing. If you're weaker than them and they want your stuff, they'll declare.
