Trump’s urban myth: No, Detroit, Milwaukee, Atlanta and Philadephia didn’t produce suspiciously high Joe Biden returns
By MICHAEL TRACEY NEW YORK DAILY NEWS |
DEC 05, 2020 AT 5:30 PM
Biden significantly outperformed Clinton in Dallas-Fort Worth.
But when viewed in totality, the results completely undermine the idea that Biden’s alleged “over-performance” was centralized in those four swing-state hotspots.
Again by any conceivable metric, Biden over-performed Clinton in the following metropolitan areas: Jacksonville, Houston, Austin, Boston, Buffalo, Washington, D.C.., Phoenix, Omaha, Indianapolis, Denver, Nashville, Raleigh, Seattle and Anchorage. And there are more. But you won’t hear much about them, because it wouldn’t be conducive to any frantic, retweetable talking points.
Ironically, the vigor with which it has been promoted diminishes and obfuscates what was really an impressive achievement by Trump: He is the one who generally “overperformed” in the inner-city areas that have been the primary target of his miasma of fraud claims.
Even New York City backs this up. After finally getting around to releasing their full results last week a full month after the election, we’ve learned that Trump’s raw vote total increased by 79% in the Bronx, of all places. Indeed, Trump over-performed relative to 2016 more in the Bronx than any other borough, while his margin decreased only in Staten Island. That should be liable to make some pundit heads spin.
Where Trump did get swamped, pretty much everywhere in the country, was the affluent suburbs, especially in fast-growing metropolitan areas.
There’s no doubt that leverage in the Democratic Party coalition has increasingly transitioned into these well-to-do suburbs, which has all sorts of implications going forward in terms of governance and political strategy. Ted Cruz might be a tad premature in declaring the GOP “the party of the working class,” but there’s something to if you look at the overall trendlines: In each of the 10 wealthiest counties in the U.S. by median household income, there was a hefty shift to Biden from 2016.
Glance at the counties along the southern border, and you’ll find extraordinary Hispanic-fueled shifts to Trump almost everywhere.

The Biden Team Strikes Back
Its strategists promote an identity politics campaign against an op-ed on Jill Biden’s use of ‘Dr.’
By Paul A. Gigot Dec. 13, 2020 6:06 pm ET
The catalyst was our Saturday op-ed by Joseph Epstein, “Is There a Doctor in the White House? Not if You Need an M.D.” Mr. Epstein, a longtime contributor, criticized the habit of people with Ph.D.s or other doctorates calling themselves “Dr.” as highfalutin, using Jill Biden as Exhibit A. Mr. Epstein can be acerbic, and his piece began: “Madame First Lady—Mrs. Biden—Jill—kiddo: a bit of advice on what may seem like a small but I think is a not unimportant matter. Any chance you might drop the ‘Dr.’ before your name?”
This has triggered a flood of media and Twitter criticism, including demands that I retract the piece, apologize personally to Mrs. Biden, ban Mr. Epstein for all time, and resign and think upon my sins. The complaints began as a trickle but became a torrent after the Biden media team elevated Mr. Epstein’s work in what was clearly a political strategy.
The difference is that when Mr. Trump rants against the press, the press mobilizes in opposition. In this case the Biden team was able to mobilize almost all of the press to join in denouncing Mr. Epstein and the Journal. Nearly every publication wrote about the Biden response, reinforcing the Biden-New York Times line: “An Opinion Writer Argued Jill Biden Should Drop the ‘Dr.’ (Few Were Swayed.)”
If you disagree with Mr. Epstein, fair enough. Write a letter or shout your objections on Twitter. But these pages aren’t going to stop publishing provocative essays merely because they offend the new administration or the political censors in the media and academe. And since it’s a time to heal, we’ll give the Biden crowd a mulligan for their attacks on us.

Thousands of maskless rallygoers who refuse to accept the results of the election turned downtown Washington into a falsehood-filled spectacle Saturday, two days before the electoral college will make the president’s loss official.
But at night, the scene became violent. At least four people were stabbed near Harry’s Bar at 11th and F streets NW, a gathering point for the Proud Boys, a male-chauvinist organization with ties to white nationalism.
The victims were hospitalized and suffered possibly life-threatening injuries, D.C. fire spokesman Doug Buchanan said. It was not immediately clear with which groups the attackers or the injured might have been affiliated.

House Democrat urges Pelosi to punish, retaliate against Republicans who supported Texas SCOTUS lawsuit
'... cleanse from our government ranks any traitors and others who would seek to destroy the Union'
CHRIS ENLOE
Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) is asking House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to punish those House Republicans who supported the Texas lawsuit that sought to overturn the results of the presidential election.
"The courageous Reconstruction Congress implanted into our governing document safeguards to cleanse from our government ranks any traitors and others who would seek to destroy the Union," Pascrell wrote to Pelosi, citing the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
"Stated simply, men and women who would act to tear the United States government apart cannot serve as Members of the Congress," he continued. "These lawsuits seeking to obliterate public confidence in our democratic system by invalidating the clear results of the 2020 presidential election attack the text and spirit of the Constitution, which each Member swears to support and defend, as well as violate the Rules of our House of Representatives, which explicitly forbid Members from committing unbecoming acts that reflect poorly on our chamber."
"Rising from the embers of the Civil War, the Fourteenth Amendment was written to prevent the destruction of the United States from without and within. The moment we face now may be without parallel since 1860. The fate of our democracy depends on us meeting that moment," he said.
...
"Donald Trump and members of his administration have committed innumerable crimes against the United States," Pascrell said, claiming the Trump administration has "engaged in treachery, in treason."
"Therefore, in 2021 the entire Trump administration must be fully investigated by the Department of Justice and any other relevant offices," Pascrell added. Then, just days later, Pascrell revealed attempts to disbar members of Trump's legal team who were challenging the outcome of the election.

The GOP chooses power over democracy
The party has embraced sedition as an electoral strategy. Nobody with any integrity should be part of it.
By Yvonne Abraham Globe Columnist,Updated December 12, 2020, 2:15 p.m.
The appalling suit brought by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton lays bare the rot at the heart of the GOP. It argued that the US Supreme Court should overturn the results of elections in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan because they changed their election rules to take account of the pandemic. That the court rejected the case on Friday night makes this only slightly less terrifying.
It’s tempting to see our current crisis as a sudden collapse, but Republicans have been undermining democracy for years, and continue to do so. They’ve thrown voters off the rolls, closed polling places, and generally made it harder for Democrats to win elections and to govern if they prevail.
The GOP, which now represents a minority of voters, has chosen power over democracy. If any of those who signed onto the president’s treacherous gambit claim to believe in the ideals on which this country is built, they are lying.

After The US Election, Key People Are Leaving Facebook And Torching The Company In Departure Notes
A departing Facebook employee said the social network's failure to act on hate speech “makes it embarrassing to work here.”
Ryan Mac BuzzFeed News Reporter Craig Silverman BuzzFeed News Reporter
Posted on December 11, 2020, at 1:46 p.m. ET
“With so many internal forces propping up the production of hateful and violent content, the task of stopping hate and violence on Facebook starts to feel even more sisyphean than it already is,” the employee wrote in their “badge post,” a traditional farewell note for any departing Facebook employee. “It also makes it embarrassing to work here.”
The departing employee declined to speak with BuzzFeed News but asked that they not be named for fear of abuse and reprisal.
While Facebook publicly claims its artificial intelligence measures catch a lot of offending content before it’s reported by users, there have been manifold examples where that system failed, leading to disastrous real-life consequences like a Facebook-organized militia event that coincided with the shooting deaths of two protestors in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Using data from a Facebook tool called the “Hate Bait dashboard,” which can track content from groups and pages that leads to hateful interactions, the data scientist listed the 10 US pages with the “largest concentrated volume of likely violating Hate Speech comments” in the past 14 days. All were pages associated with conservative outlets or personalities, including Breitbart News, Fox News, the Daily Caller, Donald Trump’s campaign and main account, and Ben Shapiro. They also shared a sample of the hateful comments posted on a recent Breitbart News post about Nancy Pelosi’s support for transgender athletes.
We have a very good idea which actors in the US drive the largest volumes of this kind of content. In the last 14 days, the 10 pages responsible for the largest concentrated volume of likely violating Hate Speech comments have been:
Breitbart
Fox News
The Daily Caller
USA Patriots for Donald Trump
Donald Trump for President
Donald J. Trump
Ben Shapiro
Conservative Tribune by WJ
US Chronicle
The Western Journal
These pages, and a few perennial others that didn’t happen to make the top 10 in the last two weeks, but that you can find by browsing the dashboard, are filling our platform with violent and hateful content at a rate and concentration that is simply overwhelming…
The data scientist also offered parting advice to Facebook: “hire more people.” Noting that the company was able to afford it, they suggested doubling the size of employees in the integrity organization. They said it would allow the company to branch out from focusing on US and English-centric content, a concern of another former data scientist.

Mark Zuckerberg paying for election operations, vote counting across U.S.
By James Varney - The Washington Times Thursday, October 29, 2020
Facebook magnate Mark Zuckerberg and his wife gave a nonprofit $400 million to pay election workers, train poll workers and rent polling locations for the Nov. 3 vote in various states.
The Zuckerbergs’ largesse is an unprecedented private expenditure on a process long held to be an exclusively public operation and has spurred at least nine lawsuits challenging the effort by the Center for Tech and Civil Life.
The Center for Tech and Civic Life, which was established in 2015, received $300 million from Mr. Zuckerberg’s wife, Priscilla Chan, on Sept. 1 and then another $100 million on Oct. 13, according to the center’s press releases.
Among the group’s top directors are three people who were previously cyberspace operatives with the liberal grassroots group New Organizing Institute, according to the nonprofit’s website.

Roiled by Election, Facebook Struggles to Balance Civility and Growth
Employees and executives are battling over how to reduce misinformation and hate speech without hurting the company’s bottom line.
By Kevin Roose, Mike Isaac and Sheera Frenkel Nov. 24, 2020 Updated 12:07 p.m. ET
SAN FRANCISCO — In the tense days after the presidential election, a team of Facebook employees presented the chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, with an alarming finding: Election-related misinformation was going viral on the site.
The change was part of the “break glass” plans Facebook had spent months developing for the aftermath of a contested election. It resulted in a spike in visibility for big, mainstream publishers like CNN, The New York Times and NPR, while posts from highly engaged hyperpartisan pages, such as Breitbart and Occupy Democrats, became less visible, the employees said.
Some employees argued the change should become permanent, even if it was unclear how that might affect the amount of time people spent on Facebook. In an employee meeting the week after the election, workers asked whether the “nicer news feed” could stay, said two people who attended.

Biden’s white guy quota By ALEX THOMPSON and THEODORIC MEYER | 12/11/2020 06:29 PM EST
BIDEN TRANSITION QUIETLY BRINGS ON FACEBOOK, GOOGLE EMPLOYEES — When the Biden transition team released the names of hundreds of personnel on Nov. 10, there were zero current Facebook or Google employees among them. That’s changed — the transition website quietly added four Facebook and Google employees to its agency review teams on or close to Thanksgiving, the hawk-eyed STEVEN OVERLY noticed. All four continue to work at their companies while on the transition administration:
— ZAID ZAID, a Facebook public policy official, joined the State Department and International Development teams.
— CHRISTOPHER UPPERMAN, a Facebook manager, was added to the Small Business Administration team.
— RACHEL LIEBER, a Facebook director and associate general counsel, now sits on the Intelligence Community team.
— DEON SCOTT, a Google program manager and alum of Obama’s Homeland Security Department, will serve on the DHS team.
Silicon Valley critics have pressured the incoming administration not to hire people with ties to the tech industry to senior posts, particularly individuals associated with Facebook and Google, which are fending off massive antitrust lawsuits. There are a number of former Facebook leaders already in top positions on the transition.
The transition told us that they “have regularly updated our agency review team lists to allow members access to the federal agencies in preparation for the incoming administration.”
A HUNTER SPECIAL COUNSEL? Biden’s pick for attorney general may be tasked with overseeing the prosecution of Biden’s son. That is just one of several possible scenarios that could result from the ongoing federal investigation into HUNTER BIDEN, JOSH GERSTEIN tells us. It also raises questions about the incoming Biden Justice Department that the transition team isn't answering.

Portland’s ‘autonomous zone’ arrestees have charges immediately dropped
Andy Ngo and Mia Cathell The Post Millennial December 12, 2020 1:37 AM
Every person arrested at the growing Red House Autonomous Zone (RHAZ) in Portland had their charges immediately dropped by the progressive district attorney.
Radical left-wing activists have been occupying the property known as the “Red House” on North Mississippi Avenue for months to protect squatters who were legally served multiple eviction notices. But a police raid earlier this week led to a series of arrests and acted as the spark for the start of the autonomous zone later in the day.
At the raid on Tuesday morning, local law enforcement recovered a stockpile of guns and weapons. Soon after, Antifa accounts on social media rallied their comrades to retake the space. Authorities were forced to retreat both on-foot and by vehicle. Police have not returned since. The zone has continued to grow with additional barricades. Occupiers have also laid nails and other “booby traps” on the street to stop vehicles from approaching.
By Friday, nearly $300,000 had been raised for the Kinney family on GoFundMe. Separately, it was revealed that the family owns a second home nearby the “Red House” despite continuing to raise funds on CashApp.

This year's so bad I have no idea how to start.
Walter Duranty (25 May 1884 – 3 October 1957) was a Liverpool-born Anglo-American journalist who served as Moscow bureau chief of The New York Times for fourteen years (1922–1936) following the Bolshevik victory in the Russian Civil War (1918–1921).
In 1932, Duranty received a Pulitzer Prize for a series of reports about the Soviet Union, eleven of which were published in June 1931. He was criticized for his subsequent denial of, and thereby exacerbation of, widespread famine (1932–1933) in the USSR,[1] most particularly the famine in Ukraine. Years later, there continue to be calls to revoke his Pulitzer. In 1990, The New York Times, which had submitted his works for the prize in 1932, wrote that his later articles denying the famine constituted "some of the worst reporting to appear in this newspaper".

In response, the employees proposed an emergency change to the site’s news feed algorithm, which helps determine what more than two billion people see every day. It involved emphasizing the importance of what Facebook calls “news ecosystem quality” scores, or N.E.Q., a secret internal ranking it assigns to news publishers based on signals about the quality of their journalism.
Typically, N.E.Q. scores play a minor role in determining what appears on users’ feeds. But several days after the election, Mr. Zuckerberg agreed to increase the weight that Facebook’s algorithm gave to N.E.Q. scores to make sure authoritative news appeared more prominently, said three people with knowledge of the decision, who were not authorized to discuss internal deliberations.
It was a vision of what a calmer, less divisive Facebook might look like. Some employees argued the change should become permanent, even if it was unclear how that might affect the amount of time people spent on Facebook. In an employee meeting the week after the election, workers asked whether the “nicer news feed” could stay, said two people who attended.

Remarkable that it took an “emergency” (post-election) for Facebook to prioritize mainstream news in its algorithm over ideologically-driven memes/junk.

I showed one comment thread to a colleague who doesn’t use Facebook and my colleague found it shocking. “Facebook created a town hall for fighting,” they said. “It’s almost like if you were building a machine to make a country divisive and extreme — if you were to sit down and plan what that would look like —- it would be this.”
4 years of this sycophant bullshit after 4 years of "President Trump is Hitler", "Is it ok to punch a Trumper" and NYT's Trump asassination fanfiction.

Playbook. THE BIGGEST SHIFT in Washington in January won’t only be that Democrats are taking the White House. It will be that the BIDEN administration will be -- as @BrendanBuck pointed out -- “delightfully boring.” @harrispolitico calls it “Joe Biden’s Team of Careerists.”
THEY BELIEVE IN A LINEAR , plodding, purposeful and standard policy process. Impulsive policymaking and widespread leaks from competing factions in the administration are probably over.
IN OTHER WORDS, if the TRUMP White House was like downing a vat of Tabasco sauce over the past four years, the BIDEN White House will be like sipping unflavored almond milk.

Trump Is No Longer the Problem. His Army of Followers Is.
From the people who go to MAGA rallies all the way up to Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell, the Republican Party’s embrace of a coup attempt is the biggest threat we face.
By DAHLIA LITHWICK NOV 20, 2020•1:12 PM
Indeed, if one were inclined to worry, this current manifestation of legal nihilism, maximalism and nullification are far more dangerous than the version we learned to live with for the past four years, because this new one is now operating separate and apart from Trump.
Even without a formal figurehead, competent authoritarianism is seeping up from below. It’s coming from Trump supporters who deny the legitimacy of the election, state officials who are pushing false claims, lawyers making laughable arguments. Trump is almost immaterial to them. The real problem is the emboldened Trumpists who refuse to give over, and Ben Sasse and Mitt Romney notwithstanding, that behavior goes from the people who attend the MAGA rallies all the way up to the top of the GOP.
Which is why Biden’s promises to “heal” the nation sound more like appeasement than they probably ought to.

Trump has repeatedly played footsie with the violent far-right. The president-elect can use this opportunity to hang that albatross around the neck of the departing president’s movement, writes Borzou Daragahi
The alleged plot described by prosecutors is terrifying. According to the indictment filed last week in a federal court in the American state of North Carolina, the four men – three of them with ties to the United States military – hoped to galvanise an armed white supremacist uprising against the government. They described themselves as a modern-day “SS,” in reference to Adolph Hitler’s most fanatic stormtroopers, committed to “knocking down The System.”.

Microsoft Sets Sights on Sony’s Home Turf in Game Console Clash By Takashi Mochizuki November 7, 2020, 9:00 PM UTC
Microsoft is targeting Japan, third-largest video-game market
Sony moved headquarters to U.S., where it gets large revenues
A senior figure inside PlayStation headquarters in San Mateo, California, said the U.S. side was frustrated by the failure of the Japan marketing team to sell as many PlayStation 4 units as expected. The person asked not to be identified discussing internal matters.
As a result, Japan has been sidelined in planning the PlayStation 5’s promotion, according to several PlayStation staff in Japan. Employees in Tokyo said they’ve been left awaiting instructions from California.
Japan-based developer support teams have been reduced by as much as a third from their peak, and the rolling contracts of a number of game creators at PlayStation’s Japan Studio, one of the unit’s oldest in-house software ateliers, haven’t been renewed, former employees said. The U.S. office believes the PlayStation business doesn’t need games that only do well in Japan, employees in the California headquarters said.
The PlayStation 5’s two main online promotional events both took place at 5 a.m. in Tokyo -- making them more accessible to American and European fans -- and lacked Japanese translation for some parts. The company also decided to standardize its PS5 control scheme so that Japanese players would have to use X to confirm and O to cancel, like the rest of the world. That reverses a 26-year tradition in a country where circles signify positives and crosses mark negatives.

"Yes, we feel we need to become a more global organisation, but this is absolutely not at the expense of our in-market strength at a country level. And I really want to reinforce the point that globalisation does not mean Americanisation, or vice versa. when empathy is constantly being asked to be given to white supremacists more than the people that white supremacy targets and harms, something is UP
