Its more than just lying. The really funny part is how pissy they get when someone points out that their lies are lies.

First off, the lies of progressivism are implausible to the point of ridiculousness. No amount of upvotes will change the fact that every cell in your body has a Y chromosome and that you are physiologically male and always have been since the day you were born. No amount of Instagram followers will change the fact that eating more calories than you burn will make you fat. No amount of retweets will change the fact that you cannot radically restructure society and expect it to work the way you want it to, solely because you want it to, whether that be abolishing the police or gutting your industry in the name of fighting climate change.

Second, the lies the progressives perpetuate are horrible. They want to believe that the world is fundamentally and irredeemably racist. They want to believe that police officers are gunning down dozens of unarmed black men every day and getting away with it. They want to believe that covid kills or permanently debilitates everyone who catches it. They want to believe climate change will kill billions of people over the next decade. They want to believe that we are perpetually minutes away from roving gangs of Nazis dragging black and queer kids out of their homes in broad daylight and violently raping and/or murdering them in the streets while no one says anything. They want to believe that all of this injustice, humiliation, and violence isn't just inevitable, it's irresistible. You are forever doomed to lose at life because of your identity and/or you are complicit in perpetuating this engine of destruction.

But what is really fascinating is that when presented with evidence that all of the above isn't true, they don't feel relief, they get defensive and angry. When they are given apologies, they don't accept them. When someone else points out the contradictions and faulty logic, they cover their ears and double down. Every time progressives get a reality check, they don't realize that what they have been doing is foolish and doomed to fail for obvious reasons of the laws of physics, biology, economics, or human nature. They double down, and they double down hard, because their self-esteem is on the line.

Progressives would rather live in a world where all of the above is really happening and we are all perpetually minutes away from the end of the world, just so they can take another hit off of the crack pipe of moral indignation and boast about how much more virtuous, responsible and caring they are then the rest of us alt-right crypto-Nazis.

Are you afraid you might be a coward? Join us in pretending to believe this lie and you can pretend to feel brave. Are you afraid that your life is meaningless? Join us in pretending to believe this lie and you can pretend your life has purpose. Are you afraid you’re mired in mediocrity? Join us in pretending to believe this lie and you can pretend to feel exceptional. Are you worried that you won’t be able to forget that you’re just pretending and that all those good feelings will thus seem hollow and empty? Join us and we will pretend it’s true for you if you will pretend it’s true for us.

You can’t be doing well if it seems like an improvement to base your life and your sense of self on an insane fantasy that you know is only a fantasy. To challenge that fantasy, to identify it as nothing more than fantasy, is to threaten to send them back to whatever their lives were like before they latched onto this desperate alternative. Its like giving a shot of Narcan to an addict, and they don't like having their good feelings threatened. So they double down to avoid the nasty withdrawal symptoms.
