I'm convinced by the way that none of these ideologues who bitch about this sort of thing actually play video games, for most of them it's a power flex.
However, the goal isn't to get more women/gays/etc., to play games, it's to subvert the main demographic (straight males) into accepting the new status quo. We see it happening already with plenty of gamers justifying or excusing various woke elements in games. I'm sure you've encountered a few intellectually bereft comments from gaming communities where they say:
"Who cares? So long as the game is fun the woke stuff doesn't matter"
"What does it matter if the character(s) are gay? So long as it's fun."
"I don't care about race swaps because a character's race doesn't."
"Pride flags? So what, just ignore them and enjoy the game."
"It's just a throwaway line about feminism, it's no big deal."
"So what if they have LGBT content in the game? Gay people exist!"
"Switching the White male lead to a black female is fine, I prefer looking at a
woman when I play anyway."
"They're just a side-character, why are you so concerned? So long as the main story is good then it's fine."
Basically, it's death by a thousand cuts for the actual gamer. The people who don't immediately stop buying and avoid the products like the plague will slowly start making excuses for the games that they believe have some redeeming quality about them but are rife with woke elements. For instance, a lot of gamers defended Spider-Man 2 because "it's a good game", and "other than the homecoming mission, it wasn't woke at all." There were people unironically using that excuse to defend the game, and worst of all, they were doing it on videos by Synthetic Man and Endymion.
The people who claim to want representation aren't the ones the games are being made for. It's for the people who don't want it. It's to bombard people with the propaganda at every turn so that -- through attrition -- eventually the holdouts acquiesce because the market is starved. That's why they're so angry about games like Stellar Blade that offer a mask-off moment for the industry. It makes it known that the Western game development racket is an emperor with no clothes.
