You mean the mid-late 1800s. Newspapers from the east were run out of town or burned to the ground for sowing division among locals when they moved into early towns in the west. Once the printing press and paper became advanced enough to be cheap and printed by the millions, "journalism" became a career for salesmen, not for truth-seekers, if it ever was.
