Nobody really wants to watch women's soccer if it's hateful lesbians playing a sport badly. Women's soccer only took off in the US because the women's team everybody remembers was really good (for a women's soccer team) and had several hot players.

I think it mostly took off because it was the 90's and the media pushed it hard.
