My parents were told to only speak English to me when I entered kindergarten. I was genuinely shocked, and still am, that I speak French. They didn't admit to it until I was in my mid twenties and taking Spanish at uni. So this can get ridiculous.

However, this sounds more like she needs to act like a professional in a professional atmosphere. If her culture doesn't have one, she is lying to herself somehow.
