He's high IQ enough to understand how absolutely vile communists are, but too optimistic and hopeful to understand the only way to deal with them. Those are great traits for the guy who wants to get humanity to Mars but not so great when you need a remorseless Terminator willing to do things they'll be vilified for to get the communists out of the way first.

We need a technology to turn communists into helicopter fuel. And/or rocket fuel. Stages of refinery.
