I’m not against the idea of a female lead character….in other games. It wont work for GTA though.
Now a read dead type game, with a sad, emotional story, based in reality. I could see myself caring about a female lead. If done carefully a story around someone like Sadie could work. I’m not sure exactly how, and there’s more ways to mess it up than get it right. But it’s possible.
But gta no. Those games you are alpha ultra masculine 24/7 doing crazy superhero death defying everything for every mission. And it will just be cringe every scene the female lead gets one over on any man.
A female side character or villain who does some of those things works in small doses in specific scenarios. Not as a lead character.
I don't think it would work well in Red Dead either, at least not the traditional outlaw type of lead character. No one would take a female outlaw seriously during those times.
I don’t think I explained myself well enough. When I was comparing it to red dead, I was speaking purely from a story aspect (sad, widow wife, etc). Not the shooter/gameplay elements. So let me rephrase by removing the red dead comparison and simply say “sad emotional grounded down to earth story” maybe in the game she doesn’t even fight or kill anyone but investigates a murder of her husband or something.
Because yes we 100% agree no female lead in a game where she is running around being masculine shooting people etc would be taken seriously.
