It's worth noting that in that case it's only the English version (and maybe other localizations) and not the original 日本語. Also unless they've changed it it's still referred to as boy and girl in at least one menu and has little impact on the game itself.

I don't say this to defend Nintendo (or the cancer that is Treehouse in particular), of course.
