I got into death metal around ~2000. At that point I reached the incredibly named anus.com.* Y'all might laugh, but this was a super reactionary place at that point. I'll always remember the triggering moment for me: a simple question of whether culture determined race (social constructionism), or whether race determined culture. Just that possibility led me down a rabbit hole that never ceased. My nasty right-wing thoughts ever permeated, and after a touch of Sowell, I was done for.
*These days, some of the reviews on the old website are available at deathmetal.org.

Some years back I was mostly apolitical but as I would learn I wasn't quite as insusceptible to propaganda as I fancied myself. During a lunch I was arguing a dumb leftist point at a friend and he paused it to ask me "what exactly do you think conservatism is?"
I didn't admit it at the time but my immediate internal reaction was simply "racism".
I basically just dipped out of the conversation at that point because I needed to figure out why the fuck I was having what was essentially a Pavlovian response to a such a completely non-threatening word with a rather open ended definition. Gave me a lot to think about, naturally. Even then I certainly didn't like the idea that I could be so successfully propagandized to.
In my defense, up to that point I never really tasseled with political questions. Some time after, Trump got elected and where my reaction could be described as "amused surprise", the entire world instead lost its collective mind and I began repelling in the opposite direction of their inane screeches.
So, long story short I'm pretty much a neo-Confederate at this point.
