So as we all have seen that the Amazon LOTR based show will go down the usual representation route which wasn't a surprise. I have to admit I foolishly thought they would respect Tolkein's legacy when I first heard of this project but that was foolish. Also when they fired the lore expert that was a major red flag.
I am getting sick and tired of entertainment saying the whole "reflect the modern world" or "reflect modern society" BS. LOTR has always been for anyone who wanted to read it, and it has been translated into many languages. I remember someone once got mad at me for saying that if you need to see yourself represented in everything, then you have a problem because you can go online and look up anything or read a book on a famous female, black, Asian, latino, etc. scientist, doctor, or whatever if that is so important to you. Why shows have to cater to these morons is beyond me.
Of course Wheel of Time suffers from the same problem. In the books they meet people of different races once they go out into the larger world and women in power are all over the books but that isn't enough.
As for lgbt stuff, I have said for years... get your own channel and write your own stories if you insist that lgbt content needs to be in everything. I remember Nerdrotic responded to someone who said that not everything has to have straight people, and he said that is true but not everything needs to have gay people and in a larger point not everything has to have everything in it.
Honestly I wish they would just stop crapping on source material of much better writers than they could ever be. They should start adapting the garbage that wins the Hugo and Nebula awards.
Sorry for the rant, just so tired of it, but thankfully I have mountains of books. They can't take those away.
LoTR is probably my favorite work of fiction. I love low fantasy, and I particularly have a fondness tor folktales and mythologies (Mainly Celtic/Nordic). I have been arguing with retards on reddit about the puerto rican elf and the black, beardless dwarf. In the last few days I have been called a bigot, racist, nazi and incel.
I have also heard the same talking points over and over again:
"Its fantasy, it doesnt have to make sense" "Its not historical, it doesnt have to make sense" "Tolkien didnt describe the skin colour/hair length of his characters"
People have also tried to tell me
Fair doesnt mean light skinned Swarthy means sub-Saharan African black
I have also been told since Tolkien was alive in the beginning of the 20th Century, his bias is what kept his books full of white-skinned characters.
They actively ignore his clear passion for the Anglo-Saxon/Nordic/Celtic peoples and his desire to create a myth for the Britain. He was a linguist, he translated real-world stories. He was exacting in his choice of words and he knew a lot about language.
They want to destroy one of the pillars of western fiction. Its too positively male. Too Christian. Too English. Too enduring. Too Hopeful. It is true art and they know they will never be able to match it.
Amazon is on track to (hopefully) kill the franchise once and for all, at least in mainstream media. The books will always exist, what more do we need?
Agreed. This is why I encourage people to just read the source material for a lot of stuff.
Yea more and more it annoys me how they do this. Like I said they need to adapt these wind Sci-fi and fantasy stories that win awards now. Leave the classics alone.
