I'm not sure why this would surprising. They simply started out with their own hosting - something that used to be standard practice before AWS existed, and what many small websites around the world still do. It's not something one needs to advertise. In fact it is better not to.
I agree regarding funding though. The admins actively reject an advertising model. Obviously somebody is propping the place up, perhaps from sources the admins don't know about, and there is no telling when they will come to collect.

Or the admins are just paying for it out of pocket. This isn't Youtube or something. All this site does is store text on static html pages.
