Socrates was right about the human mind being degraded by writing, and the internet is so much worse. If only he had known how bad things would really get.
Socrates did not bear witness to societies of no writing if he had gal to state this.
You've been consumed by modernity's temporal chauvinism and discounted civilizations such as the Scythians. The Iroquois are also interesting as their oral tradition spoke of at one time having a ballista that could sink ships and steel swords, which is corroborated by the Norse accounts who lost a ship to them, before a pacifist prophet convinced them to abandon the technology.
Temporal chauvinism is always there, simply because it's the best tool we have when it comes to judging significance of historical event.
