I judge multiplayer communities almost entirely on their reported level of toxicity.
If people are constantly complaining about the shitty toxic community, I know it's a place that knows how to party like it's 1999. Because I remember how we partied in 1999.
If people are praising the lovely community, I know it's a sanitized corporate grayspace where everyone is filtering themselves and there are no genuine interactions between players and nobody genuinely expresses their joys or their frustration whether they win or lose.
That was the greatest part of classic WoW, it was like time travelling back in time.
Everyone was an unapologetic racist and those who weren't quit or left the good guilds, because as it turns out if you are a flaming faggot you're probably shit at the game and it takes you 3 months to kill C'Thun.
It was a good year to remind me of what we have lost to communism.
Free speech 1st.
Why /pol has good discussion sometimes.... if you're willing to wade through all the spam and nonsense.
Funny, a game about regimented team based murder and people are worried about bad words.
I would agree completely, but what really got me is just how genuinely good the FF14 community is despite the fact that it's censored. My assumption is that this is the case because the game is designed to make the players happy.
I was an asshole in other games but FFXIV made me full of positivity and it's so weird.
I think it's not because of censorship, though, I think it's because the game systems encourage positive interaction and give very few reasons to have negative interaction. Combined with the fact that it's made by the Japanese, so they don't censor based on political lines - you literally just can't talk about politics in public channels AT ALL. Any politics. You also can't be an asshole. I'm surprised it actually works...
I've tried FFXIV several times (friends keep trying to drag me into it) but I just can't get into it. No world PVP, no real rivalry between guilds, no rolling up with your homies to gangrap a rival guild trying to harvest materials, no staking out an area until they're forced to bitch out and retreat and shouting GET FUCKED FAGGOTS across the region. No highs, no lows, just steady stream of 'yeah, good job'.
So... no garbage that pretty much nobody wants judging by the complete lack of it happening when there's no rewards for it (like phase 2)? Yeah, it's been a breath of fresh air, lmao.
I like some stakes in my games. I consider it cucked enough that WoW doesn't let you loot dead players.
When you remove meaningful loss from an MMO you turn just turn it into a mindless grind to endgame drip-feeding the player with constant reward.
Even Runescape understood this.
