I still kinda side with them because that entire region is basically just a Muslim country that's being aggressively assimilated. It's absolutely not China proper.

It's pretty clear the Uighurs would prefer to be their own country.

Uyghurs have their own history and culture and they are scared of being genocided. This applies to non muslim Uyghurs as well.
