Audacity was recently bought out by Muse, who added telemetry and gpl violating terms to their tos while also demanding ownership of all code from forks.
While several forks have been made in retaliation, the tenacity fork held a poll for the name and had rejected sneedacity despite the fact it won, supposedly because it's a Simpsons reference and that the project owner may have hated 4chan before the drama started.
This abuse of the fork's userbase understandably attracted a massive trolling campaign where the project owner's address got leaked and spammed with phone calls and unsolicited deliveries, causing the head of the tenacity fork to have a regressive leftist meltdown and quit the project while demanding his remaining allies report a mirror fork of tenacity containing the desired name. Edit: it's alleged he lied about phone spam, getting doxed, and IRL harassment.
Your data is worth money. Governments like spying on people. Companies are cucks.
The telemetry isn't being collected for law enforcement, the company is saying "We are collecting telemetry, and if for some stupid reason the police come to us with a warrant for that telemetry we are going to give it to them."
And the reason why you'd collect telemetry in the first place is because the new lead on the Audacity project is a UX and audio guy named Tantacrul and he wants hard data on how people use the program so that he knows what needs fixing.
