Sub sahara africa didnt even have the wheel until the white man showed up. While sub sahara africa was living in one story mud huts and shucking spears at each other for sport whites were founding Oxford university, and building Notre Dame cathedral.
I guess this is the result of the natural selection that comes about from having to have a plan for planting, growing, and harvesting your food before winter comes, compared to being able to pick and kill your food year round.
American Indians had the same problem. They were a stone age culture that hadn't changed much in thousands of years due to no evolutionary pressure to evolve. Once they met Europeans, which were an iron age culture, they got ran over because they couldn't adapt.
American Indians had wide trade networks, seasonal farming and crop rotation, complex government, animal husbandry, fashion, art and relaxation, spare time....pretty much everything they needed for civilization. What they didn't have was Iron. The South American empires had some pretty advanced metallurgy, including bronzes and advanced alloys. Just no iron.
Yea I've heard that too, but that's not something I would consider as viable. AFAIK they used them to haul some things (like sled dogs do), but they really can't hold a candle to things like horses and oxen.

The north American Indians also lacked any viable livestock or beats of burden.
They did have and use dogs as beasts of burden, so that's not too far off.
