Unfortunately those vets, should they be foolish enough to volunteer, would be looking at some seriously unfavourable rules of engagement.
I don't even know if Portland Police are in Antifa's pocket by this point - but we do know the Portland DA is - you touch a hair on a an Antifa guy's head and you're getting maximum sentencing and you're losing important bits of your voting rights and rights to bear arms.
And if you don't touch a hair on an Antifa guy's head? Well, maybe they'll get lucky with Andy this time. They've already had two goes at it.
Getting "some" security is easy. You can hire a bouncer for minimum wage 'round these parts. Now, he's a high-risk body to guard, the non-violent peaceful people want to literally murder him and attempt to do so with regularity, but I'd still bet you could get some homeless or drug addicts who'd be like "a hundred bucks to watch over you for five hours? Sweet!".
Getting the security he "needs" however, is another story. We'd be looking at minimum tens of thousands of dollars, likely more, for a single night. There are more people who would legitimately make an attempt on his life, than on any actor or currently standing politician. And that level of security wouldn't go unnoticed. Which means he wouldn't be able to DO his job properly, since it would highlight his own existence, when he wants undercover, unvarnished scoops.

It's PORTLAND.
