A short novella from 1896 depicting the fictitious election of a populist Democrat President, the results of feel-good populist policy, and the ensuing downfall of the United States.
I encourage you all to read it as there are many parallels to draw between then and now, and while it is fictitious, even then, people could see that following the Civil War Americans were still deeply divided. It's very short and can be reasonably finished in an hour or two.
Incidentally, archives are working overtime today with this somewhere in the 2700 range and still not done and already timing out twice.
