It would help if the gameplay is actually fun or engaging. Easy example is TLoU2. Gameplay is basic gun mechanics and combat that's been seen in hundreds of games to that point. Everything it does that is an improvement over the previous installment has been done better in other games, but that's not as important (or it shouldn't be) since it's story based, and many people treat the gameplay as simply something you do to get to the next story scene. Unfortunately, when the story isn't good or engaging enough, you are left with the mediocre gameplay. And if you are already disappointed or upset about the story not being what you expected or wanted, you probably aren't going to be in a charitable mood towards the gameplay.

Comparing it to Spider-Man on the PS4, that has a similar, linear storyline, but with a much greater emphasis on the gameplay. If you don't like the story you can do a variety of side missions or just swing around the city. With a game like TLoU2, the gameplay and story are linked such that you cannot play the game without experiencing the story.
