The archetypal jester is one wise enough to play the fool. Outwardly a capering madman harmless and funny enough to keep around. Inwardly perhaps a bit odd and even lacking some faculties but observant and smart enough to know where to direct his japes. The jester often has a keen sense of the politics around him, so he knows when to use (and when to sheathe) his sharpened wit.

The left, citing the sin of offense from someone whose job is to offend, shot their jesters years ago. The few that remained are keeping their wits very well sheathed, and became indistinguishable from the braying asses that replaced them.
