Get to know candidates, study their records, and actually campaign for the good ones. You will get known, recognized, and heard by them. Be in contact with your local chapter of the NRA, and find out what they are doing to actually protect your right to defend yourself. It is being seriously jeopardized. The NRA isn't worth dick but this is a prime issue they should be out working on.

Lobby your state representatives and senators (yes, you can do this yourself, just pick up the phone and call their offices). You don't want to deal with their staff. Despite what they tell you, your concerns aren't going anywhere but the trash. You want to meet with your legislator personally and find out what they are doing to improve 2nd amendment protections in your state. A lot of them will meet with random constituents by appointment. It isn't a hassle. it's their job.
