There's no culture of split screen now though. When I was a kid we used to get a bunch of us together at a friend's house and spend all afternoon playing Golden Eye or Mario Kart. It's a very different experience from online play and I think it did a lot to create social bonds, which the modern world seems to facilitate less and less as time goes on.
