I've met a lot of veterans through drug treatment. Proud isn't the word I'd use, either. Well, obviously these ones were broken at some point, but they weren't GI Joe. ONe guy just said he was an infantryman, went to Iraq, the whole 9 yards, there were body parts everywhere, and he started drinking back home for lack or purpose and due to PTSD. I say one guy, but that's basically everyone's story.

These people aren't proud that they went over and fucked up other poor people. Mainly, they went where they were told and tried not do die, because who would you attack exactly? The enemy hides and blows you up with IEDs; snipes at you. The closer they actually were to war on the ground (as opposed to sitting at a desk) it seems like the worse regret they have. Maybe regret isn't the right word.
