Not really. AFAIK it comes from chicanos, which where one of the first hispanic groups that started using an "x" for gender neutral, calling themselves chicanxs. In fact, they use the letter x as a political symbol.

Who are chicanos? Children born in America of mexican ascendence, they usually don't know anything about mexico and can't even speak proper spanish. They also like to play up the indigenous angle, to the point they may come off as the pre-hispanic equivalent of kangs (muh Aztlan).

That kind of ignorance make them obnoxious for actual latinos. Think about how the "oye primos" was recieved by actual mexicans.

Now, the kicker here is that they usually aren't well received by the "BIPOC" groups because most are too white
