This is a major problem with news reports actually and it's something that's pissed me off in the past. For example the southerners in the UK are such dipshits they think Leeds and Bradford are the same thing because they simply didn't bother checking the locations they were reporting on. You're right and they do this frequently, it's pure laziness and also partly a problem of people reporting on areas like this.
Even the political commentators I've noticed have sort of picked up on the fact that they probably shouldn't wade out of their depth on certain issues especially with Israel-Palestine being the current thing. Journalists however don't really have that level of self-awareness.
