I think there might be some cause for concern regarding long-term impact, just because the thing can be a nasty piece of work in terms of what kind of effects it can leave behind, but I think the "official" course of action has been just as damaging (if not more) and incredibly foolish to boot.

There needs to be far more emphasis on looking into actual, non-pharmaceutical treatments and solutions to help the body heal and recover itself. Sadly this isn't likely to happen because of what an idiotic, corrupt, and greedy clusterfuck the world's medical and pharmaceutical industries are.

And then of course government officials and politicians, who are all in favor of employing tyrannical tools, have no interest in letting go of such a lucrative option.
