What made it significant was that the outrage and letters sent by core gamergate got lots of traction with pro ad-agencies and brand managers.

Gaming was a safe, brand friendly way to advertise to a core demographic: Men between 25 and 45 with high disposable income of all political persuasions. After GG Gaming was politically fraught and advertising in one space or another could absolutely damage a brand.

This lead to advertisers asking for a lot more control over where their advertising was being shown; and the advertisers cut out all gaming advertising until things settled down and they understood what was going on.

Yep! This was the Adpocilypse. It completely gutted "native advertising" on YouTube, which was worth hundreds of millions to the market. I am sure about two AAA games flopped because of this.

The knock on effects of the permanent change in the advertising rate for the entire gaming press has sunk two major gaming publishing empires, and slashed the wages of all the gaming writers.

The Gaming Press got together and told gamers how much they hate us; Gamers responded by ending hundreds of millions of dollars of gaming publications.

It left a mark.
