'Representation' is a vector for easier understanding for the simple-minded. In theory this is fine for stories pitched at kids - hell you see the same shit with isekai anime ('Hey NEET-kun, you don't necessarily have to be stuck as a loser, look at all the situations where you might be a hero!'). It can help foster aspirations.

But in retrospect we would have raised better generations of people by making them exercise their empathetic instincts better - through more moral tales, stories with better characterisation, etc - rather than pandering to dummies using characters that have superficially relatable characteristics to certain target audiences. 'look, a black scientist! you're black! so you could be a scientist!' A more valuable story in a white society would have a white scientist character whose struggle can make sense to the black kid too - that way you've conveyed something of what it takes to become that scientist irl, and coaxed the black child away from the lazy spiteful racism of the average BLM retard.

Tokenism is and has always been for fucking idiots. It's fine for kids to be fucking idiots temporarily as part of their development but progressives want to enable themselves and their pet minority demographics to wallow in childish idiocy for their whole lives.

EDIT: and as other replies have noted, it's no longer even about representation, inspiration or anything like that. It's now become a humiliation ritual to race- and gender-swap known franchises or test the bounds of plausibility with a certain character's sex or ethnicity. This 'scully effect' was irrelevant long ago and anyone using it is in denial or is trying to bamboozle you with malicious intent. Fuck the push for women's football in particular. It's naked subversion of masculine values and interests.
