Women were kept around to tend the home and raise the kids that came from a world without reliable contraception.

Nobody needs a wife because I can just go into a store and buy machines that will wash dishes, clean clothes and even vacuum, and they cost far less than keeping a dependent human being that feels no gratitude and is about as loyal as the French military is to their allies.
