No that's not it. Trump was elected, they purged all conservatives from their friends and their news, and so they've been subjected to 5 years of continuous brainwashing completely divorced from reality.

You can see this visually in the trust in media poll chart where democrats bumped up +20% to 70% trusting mainstream media in 2016 -- can you imagine anybody trusting media these days?! Even the 10% trust by republicans is still waaay too high.
I've seen this personally with relatives. I show them most democrats being two orders of magnitude wrong on covid, polls covering a year span, and ask them how that happened - they literally can't believe it and come up with any excuse. They actually said that only democrats 'misunderstood the question'. Dozens of objective things showing how they've been lied to and nothing works. "Mass formation psychosis" sounds hokey, let's be honest, but it's fucking true. Their brain is not working. Trump broke them.
