A 155mm artillery shell that might kill a couple people and wound a dozen against a land target is a potential total party kill on a landing ship. Like, that's legit secondary battery sized firepower (and GUIDED now), which if you look back in the history of naval battles it doesn't take a lot of hits to kill a ship.

Imagine what Normandy would be like, if every heavy artillery shell Germany fired hit a landing ship. Not one in a thousand. Every one.
