Yeah, that's what I think all of this is for - it's all one big fucking trap.

Back when bullies more or less taught us to keep our weirdnessess under wraps and at home/for appropriate occasions, it was harder to tell who was what, wasn't it?

Just like the whole male circumcision thing was made popular after WWII so that no one could pull the "Pull down your pants" trick on the Jews ever again. Only that gave camoflage; the current "let it all hang out" movement takes the camoflage away.

Ever notice how the real freaks - that is, the kind of unfortunate folks who used to find work at the circus? I wonder what happened to them. At least freak shows gave them a place to more or less belong. Now? I guess they're just warehoused away, out of sight from polite eyes, like they don't exist. It's not like the next Lobster Boy is going to find acceptance and value bagging groceries or something.
