From what I've seen of missionary trips they don't bother with security in the slightest. They just pray God will watch over them, and besides, they'll more often than not be working with one or more native churches. Which, that'd ordinarily be fine, but a lot of these places they'll go are dangerous for these groups.

This is because a lot of these missionary groups are primarily older retirees, some middle-aged ones that managed to snag time off from work, and children who want to help others while also getting the chance to do some nice photo ops and other tourist-y things on the side.

And now, because they went into a dangerous area there's kids, probably multiple old people being held for ransom now.

It wasn't the group here, but another type is the couple or small family. With Southern Baptists for instance, we have the International Mission Board overseeing all the serious, full-time missionaries. They'll send a lone missionary, or more often a married couple (who may or may not have kids yet depending on their age. Kids come along too) out to God knows where to plant churches, spread the faith, what have you. There is of course, no security for them either. Not as much of an issue if you're in, say, Hungary or Poland, but certainly safety's an issue if they go to less civilized areas. But unlike the former, who are doing it as much for "fun" as anything, they know (or should reasonably know) more of what they sign up for.

And then you have the one or two who are just... not filled with wisdom. The guy who tried proselytizing to the Sentinelese comes to mind. Commendable faith and passion but come on, he was trying to go to an island full of people who shoot arrows at every single foreigner they see. A completely senseless waste of a life that could've been spent spreading the Gospel elsewhere.
