It's times like this that I look at Thailand's government and see way too many similarities than I care to admit.

My best guess to our current predicament, we are currently under an oligarchy who's main goal is the accumulation of wealth and power. The reason your don't see an ideological bend is because there really isn't one.

As for the degradation of culture, that's probably a side effect more than anything. The powers that be don't find the degradation threatening, so it's more or less allowed.

I'm not sure where we go from here. One part of me recognizes that such structures are inherently unstable and tend to consume themselves as certain parts of the oligarchy get churned out of the in-group. The other part of me recognizes just how much money is on the line for these people and how desperate they are to do anything to not lose their position.
