Years ago I operated some mail servers for clients, but I haven't been in that field since about 2008 and things have changed a ton so I'm not going to try something like that.

If you got good Linux and basic database knowledge this is a great guide for a powerful mailserver: https://workaround.org/ispmail

I've been using various versions of this guide for maybe 10 years or so. Runs perfectly fine on a virtual private server for under 5€ per month (in the EU anyway, I remember prices in the US being weirdly high).
