Why does it have to be an either-or thing? Looks to me like it could be a bit of both. Between totalitarianists wanting power, and humans being lulled by their own tech .... perfect mix for breeding good cattle. Throw in a dash of Fahrenheit 451 (particularly that bit about "The Family", obviously inspired by soap operas, but looks more like Facebook pr twitter now ... Can't remember now if that was a show, or interactive) ....
