I used to wonder what the long term effect of putting kids on time out instead of conventional discipline was going to be. We're seeing it now. Nothing they do is appropriate. They've never known pain or fear of real punishment, and without that fear of God put into them, they're terrified of literally everything that doesn't fit their naive world view. Discomfort and disappointment are the closest things to pain they've ever known. It didn't teach discipline, it taught guilt. They're desperate to avoid it, clinging to The Correct Ideals™ and virtue signaling to the party nonstop in order to absolve themselves of any trace of it.
