Before furries… before sci-fi was mainstream… before sci-fi was even a video medium and almost entirely in books… people held sci-fi conventions to celebrate the books, works, artists and authors. In the hallways some people with musical talent would create and sing “folk” music but about their favorite stories and characters.

One of the first cons I ever went to had a popular Filk singer who, after the con, set in one of the lounge areas with a harpsichord and just played her “hits”.

Not quite my thing but I respected the effort.
