It's amazing how before from things like Star Trek/Wars, Mass effect, Babylon 5 etc we could at least come up with aliens that we'd debate 'listen, it ain't beastiality if they can communicate and have space travel'. Hell doctor who gave us the Harkness test and the key things were they had to be humanoid and have aspects we deem beautiful in our society (Cough Asari or even Quarian)
