A lot of that stuff is for the priesthood, too. They don't need dogs to do their job. It would be rather weirder to say the same thing to a shepherd.

Dogs are regarded in the West as dirty, too, just depending on the context. We don't hate them, but they're not icons of cleanliness, either. IRL, like most mammals, they preen themselves fairly clean. I still wouldn't eat off one.
