I think there's a lot of credibility behind that theory and I think that about video games, I think that's the real reason why they screech so hard about fanbases abandoning them. The fanbase is how they make the numbers seem legit, if literally no one is playing or watching then they can't justify high sales figures from mysterious sources.

Edit: It also reveals how many bot and shill accounts there are out there which makes them all deeply uncomfortable.
