Sorry but you trying to give Islam some sort of modern liberal flair isn't going to work. You've clearly never read the book and just want to believe what you want. The Quran literally addresses your very point already. It even says EVEN IF THEY ARE OF THE PEOPLE IN THE BOOK as if the authors anticipated your attempt to misinterpret things to suit what you want. It's as clear as day. That's one thing I like about the Quran, it's much harder to fake interpretations unlike the bible.

You would be correct if for one, Europe was Christian and second of all they were a Christian sect that recognized Christ as merely a man not the son of God such as some Christian sects prior to the Catholic church wiping many out. Some sects that believe Christ was simply a man do exist today. Only those Christian would be people that Muslims aren't supposed to attack. The fake Christians, the holy trinity Christians and atheists are fair game.
