A couple reasons I think:

  1. Nobody really defines what "left" and "right" are in a concrete, predictable way. So it's very easy to redefine "thing on <left|right>" that I don't like as not REALLY being on the <left|right>.
  2. "The left" has basically consumed all culture in the US via media, education and globohomo. So in a left mainstream, colloquially "left" then becomes seen as "left of the mainstream". Which in this case is extreme leftism.
  3. In light of #2, the classic "right" vs "left" argument doesn't really make sense as much anymore. I'm not "right-wing" but I'm still extremely anti-"modern leftist".

That said, I still don't know how pants on the head retarded you have to be to claim colleges are right wing.
