When the Nazis, who had done nothing to hom or his people at that point, offered him a chance to free his country from the Communists, was he wrong to take it?

This may have been a moral dilemma for those who joined the Nazis immediately upon their invasion. This guy joined years afterwards, when they had already visited their depredations on Ukraine as well as many other areas in the Soviet Union.

You could get a PhD in Ethics for a proper dissertation on his situation.

There may have been morally gray cases in Ukraine, but this was not one of them.
