It’s motte and bailey. When you’re adapting something for a different medium, you will almost certainly need to make some changes. This basic truth should not be license for arrogant and ideologically-possessed producers and writers to massively rewrite beloved properties in order to promote political, cultural, and personal agendas.

Activist creators are essentially active saboteurs. Their own ideas are terrible and find no purchase in free markets. The goal then becomes latching on to a popular preexisting franchise so that you can deliberately subvert it by injecting your own unpopular ideas in place of the source material. This parasitic strategy provides the activist with a captive audience in the form of brand-loyal viewers. When the fans inevitably disapprove of the radical politics and degeneracy invading their favorite franchise, the activist creators always fall back on the “gotta make changes when adapting to new mediums” excuse.

Well, that and calling everyone who criticizes your work a bigot.

The dream for leftist creators is to inherit a franchise so popular that it’s inertia will generate a modicum of box office success regardless of how much they fuck it up. Then the activists can spin off that “success” into support for their otherwise unsellable original content.
