The Hollywood industry itself self-perpetuates a lot of the subversiveness because the industry is a sub culture with a rather small "in-group" (top actors, top producers, top executives). To get into this "in-group", you have to be just like them. They don't let anyone in that isn't like them and they happen to like the subversive stuff. When up and coming new writers, producers, actors, etc... start gaining any of the notoriety to be given the job of being involved in a top media production, it's because they've signalled somehow that they are conformist to the sub-cultures ideals.

It's no different than imagine what kinds of people work for the FBI and what kinds of people get promoted at the FBI. They hire for it and promote for a certain type of person. This holds true for the entire media industry. People who aren't subversive don't make it in the industry even if these people have significant talent. For a lot of things in life, it's not talent or skill that gets you ahead but instead it's how conformist to what the leadership wants you to be like.
