As far as the NY type, being around them is enough to know that you don't support them. Not everybody gets the experience, though. If you don't have any connections to the NE you may not have any reason to.

People hear Orthodox Jew and think Oriental Jew, or maybe Super Jew. What they should hear is Fundamentalist Jew. That would be the Christian sort of equivalent. Orthodox Christianity has fuckall to do with it, but I'm guessing people confuse that, too. Orthodox Jew should interpreted as Fundamentalist in the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints sense. "weird" to use a word -- and having of beliefs that would probably disturb most people. Keeps to themselves cuz, well, they kinda have to.
